Pregnancy & Chiropractic

Information About Pregnancy

We should respect the state of pregnancy and the time of birth instead of intervening. Chiropractic’s natural approach to health will assist mothers in gaining trust in the body’s natural, instinctive ability to bring their child into the world.

Many of the common discomforts experienced during pregnancy can be relieved or prevented with chiropractic care.

Chiropractic treatment is used during times of pregnancy to create an environment of balance within the pelvis region for a quicker, easier, and safer delivery.

Chiropractic adjustments help to ensure the uterus is functioning at its maximum potential by reducing nervous system interference caused by misaligned vertebrae.

The need for pain medications and medical interventions can be reduced with chiropractic care.

How Can Chiropractic Add Comfort?

Chiropractic care is an important decision in regards to your prenatal care. A rapidly growing baby within the uterus causes the mother’s body to adapt structurally that, in turn, can add discomfort or pain in the neck and back during pregnancy. Pregnancy can also stress preexisting imbalances in the spine making every day or routine activities difficult to perform.

And Added Comfort for Your Baby, Too

With a properly balanced pelvis, the ligaments connected to the uterus remain a supportive suspension system for the uterus which is more prepared to accommodate the rapid growth of the uterus. If the pelvis is out of balance, those ligaments can become torqued and twisted – known as intra-uterine constraint. This causes special limitations for the growing baby, which can then affect his or her development.

Preparing for a Safer Birth

Every woman wants to avoid a difficult labor, also known as dystocia. Often times, medical interventions are utilized to handle long and difficult labors. These procedures can add physical and emotional trauma to the stresses of pain and exhaustion dystocia has already caused. These medical treatments sometimes include administering Pitocin, epidurals, episiotomies, using force to pull the baby – a danger to the little one’s spine, vacuum extractions, using forceps, or C-sections. Each one of these medical interventions carries a high risk for you and/or your baby. If, however, your deliver goes smoothly to begin with, all of these procedures can be avoided.

Utilizing chiropractic care during pregnancy helps to restore the balance of the pelvic muscles and ligaments, adding structure to the uterus. Research shows chiropractic care reduces labor time which will make for an easier and safer delivery.

The Webster Technique

An intrauterine constraint will prevent the baby from being in the best possible position when it comes time for birth. Even with the head in the downward position, an intrauterine constraint can prevent the head from the optimum position for delivery. The baby’s head could lilt to one side or the baby could end up in the much more traumatic breech or posterior. Any positioning of the baby that is even slightly off can slow labor and add pain and distress to both mother and baby. Many are told they are simply experiencing a “slow labor” or that their baby is too big when the reality is the baby’s position is interfering with normal progress and progression.
